William Hosking Oliver (1925-2015), MA (NZ), D.Phil. (Oxon), Hon.D.Litt. (Victoria and Massey Universities), CBE.

Historian and poet W. H. Oliver was loved and respected by many. His writing, editing and teaching contributed to the shaping of New Zealand history over several decades.

Bill Oliver dedicated his memoir to 'my families', who loved him dearly: his parents William Oliver (1890-1967) and Ethel Oliver, neé Hosking (1893-1985); and siblings Margaret Jane (neé Oliver, 1920-2013) and John Oliver (1922-2001) and their families; late wife Dorothy Oliver, neé Nielsen (1928-1988); John Oliver; Steven and Nicola Oliver, and Jane; Hugh Oliver and Penelope Campbell, and Karl, Stuart, Matthew, William, Lucy and Natalie; Thomas Oliver, and Charlotte Esme; Liz and Wayne Eichler, and Rachel and Sarah; Matthew Oliver and Madeleine Collinge, and Louis and Jacob; Bridget Williams.

He cherished also the love and companionship of his friends.

A funeral service will be held on Friday 18 September 2015, 11.30 a.m. at Old St Pauls, Mulgrave Street, Thorndon, Wellington.
