Stuart Stenhouse Hudson passed away peacefully in Wellington Hospital on 25 September 2025. He is predeceased by his wife, Sheena, also from Glasgow. He leaves behind his two sisters, Irene and Margie. He also leaves behind his companion and closest friend, Robyn Ching, whom he always referred to as “a remarkable woman”. His “adopted NZ family”, the Thompsons from the Kapiti Coast, will miss him in their lives, as will his many other friends and acquaintances.

Stuart’s Farewell Gathering to celebrate his life will be held at the Cockburn Street Chapel in Kilbirnie on Saturday, 4th October at 11 am. His sister Irene, from Glasgow, will be in attendance.

Stuart lived an incredibly full life, with involvement in so many areas, almost too numerous to list. His interests and activities included tramping (often through the Tararua Tramping Club), extensive travel, Whakapapa ski patrol, Forest and Bird Society, NZ Botanical Society, the Menzshed, volunteer work with Mary Potter Hospice, Habitat for Humanity in Nepal, teaching in Myanmar (and introducing them to Garrison Kieller), long time member of Servas (as a traveller, host and latterly a friend), fishing, scuba diving, photography, wine, cider and jam making, cooking, baking breads and fruit cakes, sailing, gardening, reading, editing, little theatre, barbershop singing and music in general, Pavarotti & bagpipes. Stuart was a practical man ahead of his times with his lived experience of avoiding waste and his awareness of the need to reuse and recycle. One of his lifelong favourite activities was that of a handyman. The Repair Shop was probably his idea. He could take almost anything apart, put it back together and get it working. He was immensely proud of his Scottish heritage although he was convinced – and this after travelling almost every corner of the world – that New Zealand was by far the best place to live, and referred to himself as a Scots Kiwi.

Stuart had a quick and sarcastic wit and loved the humour of comedians like Dave Allen and Billy Connolly. As a retired English teacher, his appreciation of the English language was such that if you said you were going to boil the kettle he would quickly remand you with “you can’t boil a kettle you can only boil water”. One got accustomed to such quips. After a time teaching English as a second language to migrants, he reveled in the fact that there are Chinese people out there still speaking English with a Glaswegian accent.

Special thanks to his lifelong friends, his neighbours on Corunna Avenue, and his Saturday morning pancake group. He always spoke very fondly of his 17 years living and teaching in Taumarunui and being with the ski patrol, and there are many former high-school students who benefited greatly from his guidance. Stuart will be missed more than he would ever have known.
